Article 6 of 6 from the Series - P2P for Large AD Generators
Over the previous five articles, we have explored how selected volumes of generation can potentially achieve greater value through premium corporate demand, smarter allocation and enhanced commercial flexibility.
The final question is simple:
The answer will vary from portfolio to portfolio.
However, one observation applies to many larger AD operators: Value is rarely created by a single mechanism.
Instead, it often arises from the combination of several incremental improvements, each contributing to a stronger overall commercial outcome.
For many generators, the opportunity may include:
Individually, each opportunity may appear modest.
Together, they can create a materially different commercial result.
Multiple sources of incremental value can combine to create a significant overall opportunity.
There is another opportunity that deserves separate consideration.
Where applicable, licence-exempt supply structures can create a substantial and entirely separate source of value.
Importantly, this opportunity is not reflected in the value stack shown above.
It should be considered additional.
Depending on portfolio characteristics, existing arrangements and current optimisation strategies, some larger generators may be able to realise several hundred thousand pounds per annum of additional value through licence-exempt supply mechanisms alone.
In the right circumstances, this can exceed £1.1m per year. Pure bottom-line profit.
Some operators may already be capturing part or all of this value - others may not.
The important point is that it is worth evaluating explicitly rather than assuming it has already been fully optimised.
At this point, the most important question is no longer "Are corporate buyers interested?" or "Could P2P work for us?".
The more relevant question is: "What could this be worth for our specific portfolio?"
Every portfolio is different.
Every commercial structure is different.
Every operator starts from a different position.
Which means the only reliable way to assess the opportunity is through a portfolio-specific review.
The most important idea in this article is simple: Multiple incremental improvements can accumulate into a significant commercial opportunity.
Premium corporate demand, smarter allocation, greater commercial flexibility and licence-exempt supply structures may each contribute additional value.
The combined effect is what matters.
